Why ceiling height is different from every other measurement
You can move the ball forward. You can choose a narrower enclosure. You can switch from radar to a side-mounted camera. You cannot negotiate with the ceiling during a driver swing.
Planning benchmark: Ten feet is the most useful general target. Nine to 9.5 ft can be workable for many players, but it needs a physical swing test. Below roughly 8.5 ft, the chance of driver restrictions rises sharply.
The five-minute ceiling test
- Mark the planned hitting position on the floor.
- Put the actual mat or an object of similar thickness under the golfer.
- Have the tallest intended player make several progressively faster driver swings.
- Test both normal and exaggerated follow-throughs.
- Repeat after accounting for lights, garage rails, beams and projector placement.
Do this before ordering an enclosure or launch monitor. A cautious swing is not a valid test; indoor swing syndrome can disguise a bad room.
Does an overhead launch monitor need extra ceiling height?
Yes, potentially. Ceiling-mounted systems occupy overhead space and have specific mounting heights and hitting-area geometry. A room that is comfortable for a side-mounted camera may feel more constrained once an overhead sensor, projector and protective hardware are added.
Best use of a 9-foot room: Favor compact side-mounted launch monitors and low-profile projector placement. Only use overhead hardware after checking the exact mounting specification for the model.
