How Much Room Do You Need for a Golf Simulator?

A room can be large overall and still be wrong for the technology you want. Height, width and depth each solve a different problem.

Fast answer: Treat 10 ft of height, roughly 12 ft of width for a single-dexterity home bay, 15 ft for comfortable right/left-handed sharing, and 16 ft of depth as a strong planning target. Some products can work in less space, but the actual manufacturer minimum and your real swing always win.

Height: the constraint you cannot fake

Ceiling height is not about whether the club head technically misses drywall. It is about whether the golfer can make a normal, full-speed swing without subconsciously shortening it. Nine feet can work for some golfers. Ten feet is the more comfortable general benchmark. Taller players, upright swings and drivers need more margin.

Width: centered vs offset hitting

A right-handed-only or left-handed-only room can often use an offset hitting position. That is why a single-dexterity setup can work in less width than a shared bay. For dual-handed play, more width keeps both players from crowding the side walls. Garmin currently recommends 13 ft or more for dual-handed R50 setups; Uneekor publishes 15 ft wide as its minimum commercial dual-dexterity guidance.

Depth: where technology choice changes

Rear radar needs room both behind and in front of the ball. Garmin lists a 15 ft × 8 ft × 8 ft minimum indoor space for the Approach R10 and requires the ball to be at least 8 ft from the screen or net, with the device 6–8 ft behind the ball. Rapsodo says the MLM2PRO needs a little more than 14 ft total—8 ft ball-to-net plus 6.5–8.5 ft behind the ball.

GolfSimSelect rule: If your usable depth is under about 15 ft, make side-mounted photometric or overhead systems the default shopping list. Do not force a rear-radar product into a short room because the launch monitor itself is inexpensive.

Frequently asked questions

Is 9 feet high enough for a golf simulator?

It can be for some golfers, but it is not a universal safe answer. Test the tallest player with a full-speed driver swing and account for lights, rails and other obstructions.

How deep should a golf simulator room be?

Around 16 feet is a useful planning target. Rear-radar products often need roughly 15 feet or more, while side-mounted camera systems can reduce depth demands.

How wide should a simulator be for right- and left-handed players?

Thirteen feet can work for some products and players, but about 15 feet is a stronger comfort target for dual-dexterity rooms.
