1. Measure the clear room
Record clear width, depth and the lowest usable ceiling height. Then mark the hitting position and physically test a driver swing. If the room is shared by right- and left-handed players, account for both.
2. Choose the measurement class
Rear radar, side-mounted photometric and overhead systems have different geometry. Radar often gives excellent value but consumes depth. Side cameras preserve depth. Overhead systems keep the floor clear and work especially well in permanent shared bays, but they raise price and installation complexity.
3. Pick screen size and aspect ratio
The enclosure should be designed around the room and projector, not chosen by marketing photo. Leave safe side and top protection, allow screen material to absorb impact, and confirm the projector image can actually fill the intended screen.
4. Choose a hitting surface you can live with
A simulator can produce thousands of full swings per year. Mat shock, stance height and replaceable hitting strips matter. The hitting surface also determines the effective height of the ball relative to the launch monitor.
5. Match projector throw to the hitting area
Place the projector where the golfer and club will not create a constant shadow or collision risk. Use the projector manufacturer's throw calculator and verify mounting distance against the finished screen dimensions.
6. Add the PC and software last
Once the launch monitor is fixed, choose the software environment. This prevents buying a PC that is too weak—or unnecessarily expensive—for the software you actually plan to run.
7. Buy as a package when compatibility is more valuable than optimization
A complete package reduces the risk that the enclosure, projector, mat and launch monitor fight each other. DIY can save money and improve component quality, but only if you are willing to own the integration work.
